Mount Cofano Nature Reseve

Thanks to its great naturalistic, speleologic, landscape and historic interest, the Mount Cofano Nature Reserve is the ideal destination for a holiday of fun and adventure. It covers an area of approximately 535 hectares and it is located in a stunning location, more precisely in the territory of Custonaci. Characterized by a rich Mediterranean vegetation, it has spectacular caves opening on the sides of Mount Cofano, as well as splendid watch-towers, once considered the only protection against pirate attacks and today historic heritage.
Of particular interest is the Tonnara (Tunny-fishing factory), as a further testimony of the great attention towards tuna fishing and processing since they have always been important sectors for the local inhabitants. On Mount Cofano stands out a characteristic votive chapel dedicated to the Crucifix. Built with tuff and stones it has a vaulted ceiling and is sheer to the sea, at about 50 meters above sea level. The chapel houses the Crucifix and an altar. It is still a pilgrimage destination for many devotees, who come here every last Friday of March. Mount Cofano also offers the opportunity to enjoy trekking along the coastline, whereas the most daring can reach the top through a path (the run lasts approximately 3 hours). Since it requires skill and experience, it is a path recommended for people who are already accustomed to difficult and arduous paths.
Those who succeed in this mission can enjoy a breathtaking view, nestled between the Gulfs of Bonagia and Cofano, so that the glance can range from the Aegadian Islands, to Mount Erice and the coast of San Vito lo Capo. In order to enjoy the best of every opportunity, we advise you to wear light clothing, comfortable shoes and sunscreen to protect yourselves during the hottest hours. Make sure you always have enough water and cold drinks to fight the scorching heat of the sun and never leave your camera: every corner is worth a shot to bring you back some memories of these wonderful places.
